Kyle Hendricks tossed the first shutout of his career as the Chicago Cubs grabbed a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres to close out a three-game series.

Hendricks (1-1) gave up just five hits and struck out seven in what was also the first complete game of his career. He needed 108 pitches to finish the game, 71 of which went for strikes.

Kris Bryant hit a two-run home run and Addison Russell added a solo shot for the Cubs, who have won their last two.

Odrisamer Despaigne (2-3) gave up two runs on six hits over six innings for the Padres, who have lost five of six. Will Middlebrooks had two hits.

Lucas Duda hit two homers, drove in four and scored three runs for the Mets, who salvaged a split in the four-game series.

St. Louis' Jaime Garcia (0-1) made his season debut, giving up two runs on five hits and walking five in seven innings. It was left-hander's first start in the majors since undergoing thoracic outlet surgery last July.

Nick Swisher and Mike Aviles hit back-to- back homers in the first inning, and Danny Salazar posted a quality start in carrying the Indians to a 5-2 win over the White Sox in the finale of a four- game series.

Salazar (5-1) flirted with disaster plenty of times but held the White Sox scoreless over six frames. He struck out eight and scattered five hits and three walks to bounce back from his shortest stint of the year.

Aviles finished with four hits, Swisher had two and the Indians cruised to their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Chicago followed up a six-game winning streak by dropping the final three games of the series.

John Danks (2-4) took the loss after coughing up five runs on six hits and four walks. Danks settled down and pitched into the sixth, but the left-hander struggled mightily early on.
