Local Elementary Students Visit DeWitt County Museum For Ag Day

An annual event at the DeWitt County Museum draws dozens of elementary students.

Ag Day at the CH Moore Homestead features agriculture equipment that is of the historic variety. According to Larry Buss with the Museum, they try to educate the kids on what the agriculture looked like many years ago versus what things look like today.

Fourth grade students Seth Varble and Trevor Scott say their favorite parts of the Ag Day was watching the blacksmith work. They say it's hard to believe nails used to be made by hand.

Other students came away impressed with the evolution of the tractors and combines.

Ken Bjiellend is the manager of the DeWitt County Farm Bureau, he says thanks to antique equipment the Museum has on hand, the displays give the youngsters good perspective on how far ag has come over time.

Bjielland adds, Ag Day allows kids the opportunity to get introduced to agriculture. He feels even though Clinton and DeWitt County is an agriculture community, many students are not exposed to the industry.

Altorfer Ag, Cross Brothers Implements and Central Illinois Ag in Clinton helped provide the bigger machinery for the day of information. Bjielland says the kids enjoy having the opportunity to see the equipment up close.

Bjielland thanks the many volunteers on the Farm Bureau Board and those with the Museum who made the day a success.
