The Chicago Cubs have promoted touted prospect Kyle Schwarber from Double-A Tennessee.

Schwarber is available for Tuesday night's game against Cleveland and will serve as the designated hitter when the Cubs spend the next five days in American League ballparks.

The 22-year-old was selected by the Cubs with the fourth overall pick in last year's draft. The catcher hit .320 with 13 homers and 39 RBIs in 58 games with Tennessee.

The Cubs plan to send Schwarber to Triple-A Iowa for more seasoning after the run of games at Cleveland and Minnesota.

Reliever Brian Schlitter was optioned to Iowa to make room on the roster. Schlitter is 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA in 10 appearances for the Cubs this year.

Michael Wacha pitched through one rain delay, but the second one ended his outing in the St. Louis Cardinals' 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.

The tarp first came on the field after Wacha (9-2) allowed a run in the first inning. He settled in after that, but he was forced to exit during the second delay in the seventh and finished with two runs allowed on three hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.

Matt Carpenter reached base three times for the Cards, and Mark Reynolds' two- run double in the third was the difference as St. Louis won both games in the first leg of a four-game home-and-home series with the Twins.

Kyle Gibson (4-5), who pitched collegiately at the University of Missouri, allowed three runs on six hits and two walks in six innings. Trevor Plouffe and Kurt Suzuki each hit RBI doubles for the Twins.

Trevor Bauer twirled a gem and Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer to lead the Cleveland Indians in a 6-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Bauer (6-3) struck out seven in seven scoreless innings for Cleveland, which improved to 18-15 away from home this season. Bauer gave up four hits and three walks.

Rookie shortstop Francisco Lindor, who made his major league debut in a reserve role on Sunday, drove in his first run in his first career start. Santana finished with four RBI, Michael Brantley knocked in Cleveland's other run and Jason Kipnis scored three times.

Jake Arrieta (6-5) matched a career high with six walks in a losing effort. He was charged with four runs in five innings of work.

Arrieta struck out Bauer and Lindor in the third, but Kipnis and Brantley drew walks to put two on for Santana. He crushed a high fastball into the seats in right on the second pitch he saw.

Bauer singled to start the fifth and Kipnis replaced him on first base on a fielder's choice. Kipnis stole second for the second time of the night and scored on Lindor's single into right-center to make it 4-0.

Brantley plated Kipnis with a double in the seventh, and Santana's two-bagger scored Lindor in the ninth to produce the final tally.

Kyle Schwarber, one of Chicago's many prized young prospects, made his major league debut in the ninth inning and struck out on three pitches. The catcher was called up from Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday.

Charlie Morton tossed seven shutout innings and Pittsburgh continued to shut down its opponents with a 3-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The Pirates posted back-to-back shutouts to open this two-game home-and-home set and have produced three straight whitewashes and five in their last six games.

Morton (5-0) allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out three, and Francisco Cervelli and Sean Rodriguez added solo home runs for the Pirates, who have won six straight.

Jose Quintana (3-7) allowed all three runs on nine hits over six innings for the White Sox, who have lost five straight and will look to turn things around when they host the Pirates for the next two games.

The Pirates struck in the third as Starling Marte singled to lead off, stole second and came home on Andrew McCutchen's RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

Rodriguez homered with one out in the fourth, and Cervelli led off the sixth with a shot over the wall in left-center for a 3-0 advantage.

After working out of a first and second jam in the opening inning, Morton allowed just one runner to reach second over the rest of his start.
