Vanderbilt cruises past TCU and into CWS finals

Walker Buehler was excellent over 6 2/3 innings to lead the Vanderbilt Commodores to the College World Series finals with a 7-1 win over TCU on Friday night.

Buehler struck out eight and allowed a run on four hits in his outing, while Rhett Wiseman homered and Bryan Reynolds added two RBI.

Tyler Alexander picked up the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 frames for the Horned Frogs, who were eliminated with the loss,

Vanderbilt got on the board with one in the first, then put the game away with two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Reynolds, who went 3-for-4 in the win, drove Ro Coleman home with a single in the first for a 1-0 lead.

The Commodores opened the third inning with four straight singles, with Reynolds' knock scoring Wiseman. Jeren Kendall added an RBI hit two batters later for a 3-0 edge.

Wiseman hit a two-run homer in the fourth, then Will Toffey and Jason Delay had each had an RBI in the fifth as Vanderbilt's lead stretched to 7-0.

Buehler, meanwhile, retired the first 10 batters he faced and carried a shutout into the seventh when the Horned Frogs finally cracked the scoreboard.

Connor Wanhanen walked to lead off the inning and Dane Steinhagen moved him over to third on a single two batters later. Derek Odell plated Wanhanen with a sacrifice fly and Buehler's night ended when he allowed a base hit to Keaton Jones in the next at-bat.

John Kilichowski tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames behind Buehler to secure the win.

Vanderbilt will face the winner of the Florida-Virginia game on Saturday.

Earlier, Richie Martin had three hits and two RBI, Logan Shore pitched into the seventh inning and Florida avoided elimination with a 10-5 win over the Cavaliers.

The Gators, who lost 1-0 to Virginia on Monday, survived to play the Cavaliers for a third time on Saturday with the winner moving on to the best-of-three finals.

Shore gave up four runs, eight hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings but was backed by a stout offensive performance.

Harrison Bader and Mike Rivera also knocked in two runs apiece for the Gators, who had 11 hits as a team and scored nine of their 10 runs in two big innings.

Nathan Kirby, the Virginia left-hander who was taken No. 40 overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in this month's Major League Baseball draft, was charged with four runs -- three earned -- in 2 2/3 innings.

Matt Thaiss and Kenny Towns drove in two runs apiece for the Cavaliers, who could have advanced to the finals for a second consecutive year with a win.
