>>Former Player, MLB Network Host Darryl Hamilton Shot To Death

Former major league outfielder and MLB Network analyst Darryl Hamilton was found dead Sunday in an apparent murder- suicide.

According to police in Pearland, Texas, on Monday, officers responded to a 911 call late Sunday afternoon to find Hamilton dead near the main entry of a house located on the 11500 block of Island Breeze Street. It appeared as if Hamilton was the victim of several gunshots.

A woman, Monica Jordan, was also found by police dead inside the house with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Pearland police added that there was a 14-month old child in the home when officers responded. The child was unharmed. Hamilton and Jordan were the parents of the infant.

No other information has been released and the investigation is ongoing.

Hamilton, who had worked for MLB Network since 2013, played 13 years in the major leagues, accumulating a .291 batting average with 51 home runs and 454 RBI. He played for Milwaukee, Texas, San Francisco, Colorado and the New York Mets.

After his career as a player, Hamilton worked for MLB Advanced Media and in MLB's Baseball Operations Department before moving on to TV work.

width=>>Report Says Pete Rose Gambled During Playing Days

Pete Rose is hoping for reinstatement to baseball, but a new report on his old gambling habits might hinder his chances.

ESPN's "Outside the Lines" said it has obtained documents from a notebook containing records that Rose bet on baseball while he was a player.

Rose was permanently banned from baseball in 1989 after an investigation revealed he bet on the sport while managing the Cincinnati Reds.

The all-time hits leader had admitted he gambled on other sports, but had maintained he never bet on baseball until coming clean in 2004. He said it was only while he was a manager and never while playing.

However, ESPN said copies of a notebook seized from the home of former Rose associate Michael Bertolini during a U.S. Postal Inspection Service raid in October 1989 show Rose made bets on baseball while still a player-manager in 1986.

The documents, from March 1986 through July of that year, show Rose placed bets on numerous baseball games, including those he played in with the Reds.

Rose played in 72 games with the Reds during the 1986 season, his last as an active player. He finished his brilliant 24-year career with a big league record 4,256 hits.

>>Royals Continue To Dominate All Star Ballot

Seven players on the Kansas City Royals are in line to start the All-Star Game even after a Major League Baseball official said last week that millions of improper votes had been canceled.

That number is down from eight players last week after Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera, the two-time AL MVP, reclaimed the lead at first base over Kansas City's Eric Hosmer.

Second baseman Omar Infante, third baseman Mike Moustakas, shortstop Alcides Escobar, outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon, catcher Salvador Perez -- the overall vote leader -- and designated hitter Kendrys Morales are still in line to be starters.

Angels star Mike Trout leads the voting among outfielders, the only other non- Royal besides Cabrera currently holding a starting spot.

Bob Bowman, the CEO of MLB Advanced Media, told Yahoo! Sports last week that up to 65 million fan votes had been scrubbed because of concerns over fake or improper voting.

For the first time, voting is being conducted exclusively online. Fans are allowed to vote up to 35 times from one email address.

The game is scheduled for July 14 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

>>Nats Scherzer Named NL Player of the Week

Washington ace Max Scherzer was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday after throwing his first career no-hitter over the weekend.

Scherzer was one out away from throwing the 24th perfect game in major league history against Pittsburgh on Saturday before hitting Jose Tabata with two outs in the ninth.

Instead, he finished off the second no-hitter by a Nationals pitcher in the last nine months.

The right-hander, who was signed to a seven-year, $210 million deal in January, threw a one-hitter against Milwaukee in his previous start on June 14, becoming just the fifth pitcher to allow one hit or fewer in consecutive complete games and the first since 1944.

>>Red Sox Betts Named AL Player of the Week

Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday.

Betts batted .581 (18-for-31) with eight runs scored, two home runs, three doubles, two triples and seven RBI over seven games. He led all major league hitters in batting average, hits, on-base percentage (.594) and total bases (31).

In Sunday's matinee with the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, the 22- year-old went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, while finishing a single shy of the cycle.

Others considered for the award were Toronto's Jose Bautista, Baltimore's Manny Machado, Detroit's J.D. Martinez and Anibal Sanchez, Oakland's Stephen Vogt and Tampa Bay's Brad Boxberger.

>>Red Sox To Retire Pedro Martinez's No. 45

The Boston Red Sox will retire Pedro Martinez's No. 45 on July 28, just two days after the right-handed pitcher is enshrined in Cooperstown, NY.

The ceremony will take place at Fenway Park before the Red Sox-White Sox game. The No. 45 will be the ninth on the right field facade of Fenway Park.

Martinez played for the Red Sox for seven seasons (1998-2004) and was a key part of the 2004 team that brought a World Series title to Boston for the first time since 1918.

Martinez went 117-37 with a 2.52 ERA during his time with the Red Sox. In addition to having the best winning percentage (.760) in franchise history, Martinez ranks third in strikeouts (1,683) and sixth in wins (117).

The Dominican Republic native went 219-100 with a 2.93 ERA and 3,154 strikeouts in 476 career games (409 starts) for the Dodgers, Montreal Expos, Red Sox, Mets and Phillies.

Martinez returned to the Red Sox organization in January 2013 and has spent the last two and a half years as special assistant to the general manager.
