Cubs Beat Kershaw, Dodgers; Sox Pummeled

width=>>Bryant Homers Twice And Cubs Beat Kershaw, Dodgers

The Chicago Cubs overcame the weather, a darkened Wrigley Field and, most impressively, Clayton Kershaw in the opener of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

Kris Bryant hit a go-ahead two-run homer off the reigning NL Cy Young and MVP and added a late solo shot in leading the Cubs to a 4-2 victory.

Matt Szczur also homered off Kershaw (5-5), who fell back to .500 after giving up three runs over seven innings of work.

The Cubs used five relievers after starter Tsuyoshi Wada exited with cramping in his left deltoid muscle. Wada was pulled off giving up a solo home run to Enrique Hernandez and a single to A.J. Ellis to start the third.

Travis Wood (4-3) picked up another win in relief with 3 1/3 innings of one- hit ball, while James Russell, Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon and Jason Motte closed out Chicago's third straight win.

While home runs lit up the scoreboard, roughly half of the actual lights at the stadium went out during the bottom of the sixth inning.

Kennys Vargas drove in four runs on a career-high four hits to lead the way in the Minnesota Twins' 13-2 rout of the Chicago White Sox at Target Field.

Vargas hit one of four Minnesota homers as the Twins dealt the White Sox a seventh straight road loss and continued their recent dominance of Chicago. Joe Mauer, Eduardo Nunez and Brian Dozier also went deep in Minnesota's seventh win in its last eight matchups with its AL Central rival.

Dozier finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and Byron Buxton produced three hits and three runs scored in the prized rookie's first game out of the leadoff spot.

The offensive barrage was backed by six effective innings from Tommy Milone (4-1), who yielded 10 hits but held the White Sox to two runs. Chicago stranded 10 runners in losing for the ninth time in its last 11 overall.

John Danks (3-8) allowed three of Minnesota's homers and was pelted for nine runs -- five earned -- over 5 1/3 innings to extend his career-long troubles against the Twins.

Adam LaRoche went 2-for-4 and knocked in both Chicago runs on a third-inning single.
