NHL Votes For 3-On-3 OT; Salary Cap Set

The NHL's Board of Governors will vote Wednesday on recommendations from the league's general managers to have 3-on-3 play in overtime next season.

width=The current format is 4-on-4, but the GMs are advocating a change along with another recommendation to expand video replay. That would allow coaches to challenge goals scored off of potential offside or goalie-interference plays.

The NHL has had its 4-on-4 rule since 1999. A total of more than 44 percent of its games were decided in that format last season. A change in the 3-on-3 concept will likely reduce the number of shootouts.

The American Hockey League (AHL) currently has a 4-on-4 format for the first three minutes of a seven-minute overtime period. After that, it's reduced to a 3-on-3 situation.

The NHL and the NHLPA announced on Tuesday that the salary cap for the 2015-16 season will be $71.4 million, with an adjusted midpoint of $62.1 million and a lower limit of $52.8 million.

The new number is an increase over the $69 million cap for the 2014-15 season.

This summer's free agent period begins July 1.
