Champaign Officer Charged With Assaulting Past Girlfriends

Authorities say the Champaign police officer selected last year's officer of the year has been charged with sexually assaulting two former girlfriends.

According to reports, 31-year-old Jerad Gale has been charged aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault and aggravated domestic battery in Champaign County and criminal sexual assault in neighboring Piatt County.

Gale has not entered a plea and said in court Wednesday that he does not yet have an attorney.

Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Gale was arrested Tuesday. One former girlfriend contacted police last month accusing him of assaulting her in November 2013.

The Piatt County charge stems from alleged incident in July 2012.
