The Illinois attorney general has announced a settlement with the Illinois High School Association that would allow student athletes with disabilities full opportunities to compete in certain sports.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office announced the settlement Wednesday. The settlement would allow disabled student athletes to compete and earn points toward a team state championship in swimming, diving and track and field. Madigan's office says the settlement resolves a lawsuit brought in 2012 by a disabled high school swimmer from Oak Park.

Under the settlement the IHSA must maintain records for disabled student athletes the same way it does for all sports, among other actions.

The IHSA is the organization that oversees high school sports in Illinois. A spokesman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the settlement.
