One Month Budget Fails At Statehouse

An effort to pass a temporary one month budget bill at the Statehouse has failed.

House Democrats and Republicans were unable to agree on a spending patch. On the House floor Wednesday, Republicans and Democrats battled back and forth over a one month patchwork plan. Republicans say the passage of the bill is another path to an unbalanced budget. Republican State Rep. Tom Demmer says that a one month patch isn’t good enough.

The bill would have supported core state services like the Illinois State Police, meals for the elderly and support of veteran’s homes. Republicans maintain that the proposed spending is again out of balance and therefore unconstitutional.

The bill needed 71 votes to pass and only mustered 67 votes.
