>> Mets finally score, but Cubs complete sweep

Jonathan Herrera drove in three runs and Jake Arrieta dominated the struggling New York offense, as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Mets, 6-1, to complete a three-game series sweep at Citi Field.

Miguel Montero added a two-run homer and Starlin Castro added a pair of hits and scored a run for Chicago, which also completed a season sweep of the offensively-inept Mets, winning all seven games.

Arrieta (8-5) allowed just one run on five hits in eight innings, striking out seven without walking a batter.

The right-hander outdueled his New York counterpart, Jacob deGrom (8-6), who took the loss after allowing four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.

DeGrom did account for one of the Mets' five hits, as the club continues to be offensive offensively. The Mets did end a streak of 22 straight innings without a run, scoring in the third inning of this game, it's only run in 29 innings of the series. This was the 21st time this season the Mets scored one run or fewer in a game.

>> Venable's 11th-inning HR lifts Padres over Cards

Will Venable belted a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the 11th inning to boost the San Diego Padres to a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals to open a four-game series.

The Padres challenged a foul ball call with two outs in the 11th and the replay went in favor of the visitors. Clint Barmes hit a ball tight to the line, where right fielder Jason Heyward made a sliding catch attempt. Upon review, the call was reversed to a ground-rule double. On the next pitch, Venable, who came into the game hitting .359 in his career at Busch Stadium, homered off Carlos Villanueva (3-3) to right-center field.

Craig Kimbrel allowed a leadoff single to Kolten Wong in the bottom of the 11th, but then retired the next three hitters to record his 20th save and send the Cardinals to their third straight home loss.

Padres starting pitcher Tyson Ross hit a solo homer. Yangervis Solarte belted a solo shot for the Padres, but was ejected for arguing a strikeout on a checked swing in the sixth inning.

Tim Cooney pitched six innings for the Cardinals, who went 1-for-13 with men in scoring position and stranded 13 base runners. Cooney, who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to make his second major league start, allowed four hits and three runs -- two earned -- with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.

>> Cards call up Cooney for Thursday start, put Jay on DL

The St. Louis Cardinals recalled left- hander Tim Cooney from Triple-A Memphis to start Thursday night's opener of a four-game series against San Diego.

The Cardinals opened a roster spot for Cooney by placing outfielder Jon Jay on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist injury. He spent time on the DL in May because of tendinitis in the same wrist.

Cooney, who was named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team, will be making his second MLB start. The 24-year-old made his big league debut in a start against Philadelphia on April 30, giving up three runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings of a 9-3 St. Louis win.

He has compiled a 6-4 record with a 2.74 ERA in 14 starts for Memphis this season.

Jay is batting .223 with a home run and 10 RBI in 57 games this season.
