Concerned Residents Turn Out For Support From Board Over Atrocious Odors

width=A DeWitt County business has come under fire the last six months over odors permeating from the site west of Clinton.

H & M Trucking has been the focus of residents' efforts to reduce the cause of a smell that originates from a pond at the trucking facility. Angie Koshinski addressed the Board Thursday night and provided nearly 75 pages of documentation to the Board on the issue.

She says they have no confidence in the Environmental Protection Agency to remedy the problem. She explains people across the community have reported the smell and the effects it has on them.

Among the documents Koshinski presented the Board were documents from H&M Trucking owners. She feels the reasons they give for the smell indicate they may have been in violation of the permits they had at the time.

Over a year ago, complaints started filing in to the EPA, and Koshinski says fault should fall on representatives of the EPA because of their lack of attentiveness to the problem and addressing it.

According to Koshinski, documents indicate the owners of H&M Trucking were reluctant to run the filters of the ponds during the day, however, the EPA made the recommendation to run them mostly during the day. She also points out, the filters in the ponds had no documentation of being cleaned since they were constructed 25 years ago.

Ultimately, the EPA slapped the company with two violations.

Koshinski also points out business around the area have received complaints about the smells and they feel it has hindered their business.

The EPA indicated to Regional Radio News in June, H&M Trucking has cooperated with them in their efforts to help the rid the community of the smell and get better flow for their separation tanks.
