A NEW STATE LAW EXPANDS ANIMAL CRUELTY LAWS TO INCLUDE LEAVING PETS IN EXTREME WEATHER.

THE LAW KICKS IN IF A PET DOG OR CAT IS LEFT IN VERY HOT OR VERY COLD WEATHER…AND IS INJURED OR DIES AS A RESULT. IT WAS SPONSORED BY SENATE PRESIDENT JOHN CULLERTON…WHO SAYS IT AIMS TO CLARIFY STATE STATUTE IN THESE CASES.

THE FIRST OFFENSE IS A MISDEMEANOR. IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN, THE PET OWNER WILL FACE FELONY CHARGES. THE LAW TAKES EFFECT IN JANUARY.
