SIU Reports Slight Drop in Enrollment

Enrollment at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale has reached its lowest point in decades.

About 700 fewer students are attending the school this fall, accounting for an almost 4 percent decrease. In fall 2014, roughly 17,990 students were enrolled, compared to about 17,290 students this fall.

Reports indicate administrators expect the enrollment decline will result in $5.2 million in lost revenue for the university. On top of the anticipated state budget cuts, that means programs and services could be cut at the school over the next few weeks.

Randy Dunn, president of the SIU system and the Carbondale campus's acting chancellor, says smaller freshman and graduate student classes contributed to the overall enrollment decline.
