Illinois Lifts Ban On Out of State Birds At Fairs, Shows

State agriculture and health officials say birds from other states once again may participate in Illinois shows, fairs and exhibitions.

Out-of-state birds were banned starting on June 5 because of concerns over an avian flu that showed up in several states.

Officials say no bird flu cases were detected in Illinois during the outbreak, and none have been reported in the U.S. since June 17.

Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Philip Nelson says the state will work closely with federal agricultural officials and other state agencies to monitor for the disease. They'll also continue educating commercial and backyard producers about measures to prevent an outbreak.

The highly virulent avian influenza was discovered in the U.S. in December. Over 48 million birds have either died or were euthanized due to the virus.
