Blackhawks Kane Says He Will Be Absolved

The Chicago Blackhawks opened their training camp at the University of Notre Dame on Thursday afternoon with what can only be described as an uncomfortable press conference addressing the ongoing legal investigation around forward Patrick Kane.

width=Kane is currently at the center of a police investigation amid allegations of a sexual assault in upstate New York during the summer. The case is expected to go before a grand jury in the coming weeks. After Blackhawks president John McDonough confirmed that Kane, despite his off-ice issues, will in fact participate in camp, the forward read the following prepared statement to the media.

"This has been an incredibly difficult time for many people. I cannot apologize enough for the distraction this has caused my family, my teammates, this incredible organization and of course our fans. While I have too much respect for the legal process to comment on an ongoing matter, I am confident that once the facts come to light, I will be absolved of having done nothing wrong."

Following that statement, Kane answered any non-hockey question by simply saying he appreciated the question, but would be unable to answer it given the ongoing legal process. He even gave the same answer when asked, no matter how this ends up playing out, if he will give up drinking. Given the current situation, as well as Kane's inability to answer anything that didn't relate to hockey -- and hockey is obviously a very distant secondary matter when it comes to Kane at this point -- it made his presence at the press conference all the more confusing and awkward.
