Bears Trade Pair of Defensive Players

>>Bears Trade DE Allen To Carolina

The Carolina Panthers say they've acquired veteran defensive end Jared Allen from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a future late-round draft pick.

The trade will become official once Allen passes a physical, team spokesman Steven Drummond told The Associated Press.

FoxSports first reported the trade.

The Panthers felt the move was necessitated after their top pass rusher Charles Johnson went down with a hamstring injury in Sunday's 27-22 win over the New Orleans Saints.

width=The Panthers lost their other top pass rusher Greg Hardy this past offseason when he signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent.

Allen has 134 career sacks during his 12 seasons, but his sack production has slowed since joining the Chicago Bears and their 3-4 defense last season. He'll play in a more familiar 4-3 scheme with Carolina.

>>Bears Trade LB Jon Bostic To Patriots

After losing their first three games of the season, the new regime in Chicago appears to be in the process of burning down whatever it was the previous regime was trying to build.

According to ESPN, for the second time on Monday, the Bears traded away a defensive player who just doesn't fit within Vic Fangio's defense. It was Jared Allen to the Panthers earlier on Monday. Now, it's Jon Bostic to the Patriots.

Former Bears general manager Phil Emery drafted Bostic, a linebacker from Florida, in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons, Bostic played in 29 games, compiling 140 combined tackles, two sacks and one interception.

Bostic's struggles had less to do with his athletic ability and more to do with his inability to make the correct reads, fill his correct gaps and cover targets down the field.

After the entire Bears regime was jettisoned in the offseason -- from Emery to the defensive coordinator, Mel Tucker -- new GM Ryan Pace managed to land Fangio from the 49ers. But Fangio's defenses typically operate out of a 3-4 rather than a 4-3, and Bostic was an uncomfortable fit -- much like Allen.

Bostic has not played in any of the first three games of this season, as he dealt with an ankle injury.
