Blackhawks release Visnovsky, Kopecky from tryout deals

The Chicago Blackhawks made a couple of roster moves Monday when they released veterans Lubomir Visnovsky and Tomas Kopecky from their training camp tryout contracts.

Kopecky, who won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks during the 2010 season, spent the past four seasons playing in Florida and was facing long odds to make the Blackhawks roster even after a summer of roster moves that saw the team's depth get ripped apart due to the salary cap. But even with all of that movement the Blackhawks were able to replenish a lot of that depth with the additions of Artem Anisimov, Marko Dano, Ryan Garbutt and the free-agent addition of Viktor Tikhonov and Artem Panarin from Europe.

They're also going to get additional contributions from Teuvo Teravainen after he started to show signs of a breakout in the playoffs.

When he was originally brought in, Visnovsky seemed to have at least a decent shot at cracking the roster given the losses of Johnny Odouya and Kimmo Timonen over the summer. Even though he's 39 and has been significantly limited by injuries in recent years he can still move the puck well when healthy and provide some offense from the blue line.

But his fate seemed to be sealed when the Blackhawks elected to bring veteran defenseman Michal Rozsival back earlier this month on a one-year deal.

With Monday's cuts the Blackhawks roster seems to be taking shape with 22 players under contract (13 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies) and still a little more than $319,000 in salary cap space, via General Fanager.
