In a game heard Friday night on WHOW, the Clinton Maroons fell to the Warrensburg-Latham Cardinals in a 58-53 Homecoming shootout.
In a game that saw 111 total points put on the board, neither team's defense seemed to have answers for stopping the opponent's offense.
Warrensburg got on the board first with a 79 yard touchdown pass on their second play from scrimmage, and the scoring race was on from there. The Cardinals took a 43-25 lead into the half, and despite the Maroons scoring 21 unanswered points to end the game, the cushion proved to be too much to overcome.
Both teams put up eye-popping numbers on offense. The Cardinals were led by Senior Quarterback Jacob Napier, who went 15 of 28 passing for 472 yards, 6 touchdowns, and an interception. Sophomore Runing Back Dionte Lewis ran the ball 19 times for 76 yards and a touchdown. Lewis added 9 catches for 388 yards and 5 TDs. He also had an 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, bringing his TD total for the night to 7!
As for the Maroons, they were led by Senior Tanner White. He ran the ball 3 times for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. White also had 4 catches for 79 yards and a circus catch for a TD. Tanner White was the Stephan York Country Financial Maroons Player Of The Game.
Quarterback Noah Griffin had 16 carries for 154 yards and 2 TDs on the ground. He was 8 of 16 passing for 161 yards, 1 touchdown, and an interception. Running Back Alec Cooley added 20 carries for 125 yards and 3 TDs for the Maroons.
With the loss, Clinton falls to 3-4 on the season, and 1-4 in the Central Illinois Conference. The Maroons also see their playoff hopes take a big hit with the setback. Warrensburg-Latham keeps their playoff hopes alive with the win. The Cardinals improve to 3-4 on the year, and 2-3 in the conference.
