Clinton Schools Superintendent Still Waiting on Complete PARCC Results

The first year of the PARCC assessments given to students did not go well and one school leader is quick to point out, those figures are still not final.

According to Clinton Schools Superintendent Curt Nettles, many districts, for a variety of reasons, were unable to administer the PARCC tests online, which is slowing the official results. He says because of that, he will reserve judgment.

Many administrators take issue with the PARCC tests because higher education institutions do not yet recognize the tests for their standards. Nettles indicates while students still have the chance to take the ACT and ISAT tests, he feels more needs to be done to include higher education.

Nettles also points to wanting to have more local control. He feels as though schools need to be more accountable to their local constituents though he thinks there should be less accountability to the state.

The common core standards recently adopted by Illinois and many other states, seeks to build on what students are learning year after year, however, upper level students have not been through the entire process, though the curriculum and PARCC assessments would reflect that.

Nettles says those students took the tests simply to create a standard to have some accountability.

He does not believe potential poor scores by students will effect their status will colleges.

Nettles anticipates Clinton, and schools across the state, to improve in the years ahead.
