Local Leaders Remember Former DeWitt Sheriff Don Massey

 width=DeWitt County lost a former leader earlier this week.

Former DeWitt County Sheriff Don Massey passed away Wednesday at the age of 90. DeWitt County Board Chair David Newberg remembers Massey as a man that cared a lot about the community and for the people he served.

Sheriff Jered Shofner indicates he started his career in the Sheriff's office after Massey had retired but he says Massey was always willing to spend time with him and share his knowledge of the position.

Massey was a second generation farmer southeast of Clinton and had served in the U.S. Army in Okinawa, Japan. He became a part time DeWitt County Deputy Sheriff in 1968 and served until he was elected Sheriff in 1978. He served two terms as DeWitt County Sheriff retiring in 1986.

Services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, October 26, 2015 at the Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, Il. with J. Kent Hickerson officiating. Burial will follow at Mausoleum Park Cemetery, Clinton, IL with military honors. Visitation will be 4 – 7 P.M. Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, Il.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Christy Massey Foundation Inc. for the park renovation project.
