Halloween Safety Reminders

Candy, costumes and scary decorations are apart of the fun this weekend across the country.

As kids, young and old, hit their respective community streets for Halloween Saturday night, area law enforcement has some reminders for parents and children. Clinton Police Chief Ben Lowers reminds residents to practice patience during the evening hours of Halloween, as hundreds of kids will be hitting community streets.

The Chief recommends children be accompanied by an adult and to travel in neighborhoods you are familiar with. Chief Lowers also recommends glow sticks for the kids to make them more visible.

The Chief encourages the kids to have patience as well. He explains the streets will be very congested in many neighborhoods across central Illinois this Saturday. He says between increased traffic and the costumes they wear, there's tripping hazards and other accidents that could ultimately happen.

Chief Lowers recommends giving kids gum to chew on before they head out to trick-or-treat to keep them from eating candy while they are out.

He also advises parents looking over candy before allowing their kids to eat it to make sure everything is packaged properly and does not recommend giving homemade treats.
