Leadership Shift At Exelon in Clinton

Ted Stoner, a longtime Macon County resident whose career in nuclear power spans nearly two decades, has been named site vice president at Clinton Power Station in Central Illinois, Exelon Generation announced today.

“I look forward to ensuring that Clinton continues to be a strong economic engine for the community, while remaining one of the highest performing plants in our industry,” Stoner said. “I also intend to keep building relationships with our neighbors and local officials in DeWitt County.”

width=Stoner’s primary responsibility will be to oversee the safe and reliable operation of Clinton Station and to ensure the public is kept informed of the operation of the nuclear facility. Stoner replaces Mark Newcomer, who was appointed vice president of Mid-Atlantic operations at the company’s corporate offices in Pennsylvania.

Stoner has spent his entire nuclear career at Clinton, serving most recently as plant manager. Stoner began his nuclear career as a union maintenance technician, rising to leadership roles in projects, work management and maintenance.

In a related move, Brad Kapellas has been promoted to Clinton Station’s plant manager. In his new role, Kapellas is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the plant, including maintenance, work control, chemistry/environmental and radiation protection departments.

Kapellas, a 25-year veteran of the nuclear power industry, joined Exelon as a laborer at LaSalle County Generating Station in 1990 and has held numerous roles with increasing responsibility. Most recently, he held positions of Maintenance Director and Operations Director at Dresden Generating Station in Morris, Ill.

Exelon operates 11 nuclear units at six sites in Illinois. These facilities provide 48 percent of the state’s total electricity and 90 percent of its carbon-free electricity.
