Researchers use crowdfunding to support hepatitis C study

University of Illinois Springfield researchers are using crowdfunding to raise money to test homeless people for hepatitis C.

The professors plan to test homeless people in Bloomington, Champaign, Decatur, Peoria and Springfield. The goal is to conduct RNA testing to study the spread of the disease.

The study is being led by Kanwal Alvarez, UIS assistant professor of biology, and Josiah Alamu, associate professor of public health. They are getting help from Dr. Janak Koirala of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

They want to raise at least $500 and up to $2,000 by mid-December. The money will pay for test kits and other equipment.

Homeless people with histories of illicit drug use are more vulnerable to hepatitis C infection.
