Better Government Group Discusses Consolidation

The Better Government Association is weighing in on the issue of government consolidation. Governor Bruce Rauner has said Illinois needs to reduce the number of local governments with the state having far more units of government than any other state.

Better Government senior policy anlayst Alden Loury recently testified at the Lt. Governor’s Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandates Task Force meeting. He says townships are an area that needs further review, although it might take a case by case review as some township appear to be much more essential than others.

In Belleville, Belleville township recently decided to shut down on its own after 130 years, transferring its mission to the city of Belleville. Loury says school consolidation has proceeded at a respectable pace in the last 30 years but further consolidation could address the large administrative costs of Illinois schools.
