Property Tax Freeze Impacting Schools Budgeting

A focal point of Governor Bruce Rauner's turnaround agenda is a proposed property tax freeze.

As the possibility of a freeze looms on the horizon, area school leaders are indicating it is impacting how they are budgeting. Susan Wilson is the Superintendent of Blue Ridge Schools and explains because of that possibility, they are increasing their levy heading into 2016.

A property tax freeze proposal is for two years however there is growing speculation among entities across the state the freeze would ultimately be made permanent. Wilson indicates, if that is the case, they need to think long term about their levies for future budgets

Wilson believes a tax freeze sounds good, especially for lawmakers to talk about with their home constituencies, however, she points out, it would have a reverse effect, and believes the blame would come back on the governing entities.

Wilson says when Springfield makes claims of a tax freeze, that claim can be misleading because of the reaction from school boards and government entities across the state.
