Late FG Lifts Cowboys Past Ridskins; Rams Fire OC

All in all, it was an ugly game, devoid of any style points or many scoreboard points until the final 1 1/2 minutes. Perhaps fittingly, a fumbled punt return by Washington's DeSean Jackson deep in his own territory led to Dallas' only touchdown.

And yet, none of that mattered to Dallas, really, because by beating Washington 19-16 on Dan Bailey's 54-yard field goal with 9 seconds left Monday night, the Cowboys somehow keep themselves in the thick of the playoff chase in the woeful NFC East.

The last-place Cowboys (4-8) won for the first time this season without quarterback Tony Romo and are only one game behind the Redskins, Giants and Eagles, who are all 5-7.

Redskins QB Kirk Cousins went 22 for 31 for 219 yards, the one TD and zero interceptions.

Cowboys QB Matt Cassel finished 16 for 29 for 222 yards, with several of his throws landing nowhere near teammates.

Dez Bryant finished with three receptions for 62 yards, including a diving 42-yard grab that led to a field goal.

The teams combined for 16 penalties for 144 yards.

>>Rams Fire OC

The Rams offense has been one of the worst ones in the NFL all season and now, offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti has paid the price.

The team announced on Monday that Cignetti has been fired after just 10 months on the job.

Cignetti was hired by Fisher in 2012 to serve as the Rams quarterbacks coach. After three years at that position, Cignetti was promoted to offensive coordinator in February.

The promotion turned out to be a disaster for Cignetti, who basically had to somehow figure out a way to devise an offense that could work with either Nick Foles or Case Keenum at quarterback. That didn't happen though, which has been evident in the Rams' offensive struggles.

The offense has been especially ugly during the Rams' current five-game losing streak.

Including Sunday's 27-3 loss to Arizona, the Rams have only averaged 10.3 points and 275 yards per game over the past five weeks. Overall, the Rams offense ranks 31st in the NFL, ahead of only the 49ers.

>>Johnny Manziel To Start This Weekend

Three weeks after Johnny Manziel was named the Cleveland Browns' starter for the remainder of the season and two weeks after he was demoted due to his off-field behavior (without even making a start in between those two events), it looks like he may get another shot after all.

According to a report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen (via Adam Schefter), Manziel will get the start in Cleveland's next game, against the San Francisco 49ers.

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora had previously reported ownership wants to see Manziel start and the coaching staff does not, ownership would eventually get its way at some point this season.
