There’s no easy fix to stem police misconduct cases, even as taxpayers of Illinois’ largest city continue to pay out big settlements.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports lawyers got $1.8 million as part of the $5 million settlement in the case of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald being gunned down by Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke in October of 2014. Lauren Krisai (chris-eye), director of criminal justice reform with The Reason Foundation, says similar cases across the country are gaining more of the public’s attention as taxpayers are on the hook for paying out the settlements.

Krisai says those hurt by police actions should have their day in court and be compensated but there’s no one solution to solve the problem of taxpayers being on the hook for the actions of bad cops.

Meanwhile previous Sun-Times reports indicate Chicago taxpayers have paid more than half-a-billion tax dollars on police misconduct settlements in the past decade.
