City Approves Bid for AREA Despite Being Outbid By J&S Disposal

width=Despite being outbid by a local company, the Clinton City Council Monday night chose to stick with AREA Disposal for their garbage collection needs.

Several Council members voiced a sentiment of rewarding loyalty as their primary reason for sticking with AREA. Commissioner Tom Edmunds (right) says AREA has been a great benefit to the community and felt they've also benefited the City in tough times.

width=Commissioner John Wise (left) says the reason he is supporting AREA is not only because of loyalty but because sometimes lower bids are not always the best bids. He adds, despite AREA's bad press in recent years, he feels they still do things right.

Commissioner Nan Crang also echoed some of the same sentiments at Wise, and feels their role in the community is worth considering.

The Council did not technically have to go out for bid for the service of garbage cleanup. City Attorney Steve Myers indicates because of that, they Council was not required to take the lowest bid.

A contract with AREA was approved for three years with a 2.5% increase each year over the life of the contract. AREA's bid was roughly $24-hundred greater than J&S Disposal's.

The contract was approved 4-0. Commissioner Dan Ballenger abstained citing a professional relationship with both companies.
