Oklahoma No. 1 in Country; Lose on Road To Iowa State

Georges Niang scored 22 points, Monte Morris added 20 and No. 19 Iowa State beat top-ranked Oklahoma 82-77 on Monday night, its first win over a No. 1 team since toppling Wilt Chamberlain's Kansas Jayhawks in 1957.

Morris had a jumper, a key rebound and two free throws in the final 21 seconds for the Cyclones (14-4, 3-3 Big 12), who were actually slight favorites at home.

It was the third time a No. 1 team lost within Iowa's borders this season. Northern Iowa beat North Carolina and Iowa beat Michigan State.

Oklahoma, which moved to No. 1 earlier Monday for the first time in 26 years, didn't go down quietly. Isaiah Cousins hit a 3 with 41 seconds left to tie the game at 75.

But Morris drilled a step-back jumper for the lead, and Abdel Nader's free throws with 3.1 seconds to go put it out of reach.

Buddy Hield scored 27 points and Cousins had a career-high 26 for the Sooners (15-2, 4-2). They could make a case for retaining the top spot with a win Saturday at No. 13 Baylor.

Oklahoma's two losses came in two of the toughest places to play in the country. The Sooners fell in triple overtime at Kansas in arguably the best game of the season so far.

The last time Oklahoma was the No. 1 team in the country, it was coached by Billy Tubbs, the Sooners averaged more than 100 points per game, and Skeeter Henry led the team in scoring.

Now, 26 years later, the Sooners are sitting at 15-1 with the leading candidate for Player of the Year in Buddy Hield and have been unanimously voted by the Associated Press' voters as the best team in college basketball. Monday's poll finds the Sooners slotted ahead of UNC, Kansas, Villanova and Xavier. Overall, it was a volatile week inside the polls -- so many ranked teams lost games over the past seven days -- but there were only two teams that got pushed out of the rankings. Within the numbers, West Virginia jumped up to sixth from 11th. Iowa moved from No. 16 to 9. Texas A&M is now in the top 10 after being No. 15 last week.

Duke and Kentucky took on rough losses, but they're both still ranked, too. Kentucky falls from 14th to 23rd, while the Blue Devils slip from No. 9 to No. 20. Inversely, Baylor's big week saw the Bears leap from 22 to 13.

The Sooners received 26 first-place votes this week in the coaches poll after Oklahoma State on the road and now-No. 7 West Virginia at home. Behind Oklahoma, North Carolina is No. 2 with four first-place votes, and Kansas is No. 3 with one. Villanova and Maryland round out the top-five.

None of those teams particularly moved far in one direction or the other. However, there was quite a bit of movement throughout the rest of the poll. Iowa, now No. 9, was the biggest mover, rising 10 spots. Baylor jumped up seven spots to No. 15. Texas A&M is now No. 8 after rising six places.

With those rises, there were plenty of falls as well. Duke, following two losses this week to unranked teams, fell six spots to No. 12. Kentucky, who lost to Auburn over the weekend, also fell six spots to No. 19. Both Providence and Miami (Fla.) fell five spots each, to No. 17 and No. 15 respectively.

Despite those losses though, there is only one newly ranked team. USC replaced Gonzaga in the poll after the Trojans won at UCLA last week and the Bulldogs fell at home to BYU. Southern Cal is now 15-3 on the season.
