Municipal League Says Joint Purchasing Agreements Have Few Downsides

The state could be partnering more with local governments to find cost savings for taxpayers, according to the Illinois Municipal League.

IML Executive Director Brad Cole says the state currently has a program to join with local governments to purchase things like police squad cars, but they could do more to partner with local governments.

Cole says there are also regional procurement agreements the state could join. Meanwhile Cole says there is one downside to Joint Purchasing Agreements -- overlooking local products or services.

Governor Bruce Rauner said last week he hopes to find more savings through quote “rethinking how government buys things.”
