The Peoria Fire Department estimates fire damage at the shuttered Madison Theater at a half million dollars.

Fire investigators are still looking for the cause of the Saturday night blaze. The building remains structurally sound.

The theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Three years ago, Landmarks Illinois listed it as one of the state's most endangered historic places.

Ten years earlier it was closed when city inspectors determined it needed safety upgrades.
