Court decision on Independent Map Amendment expected Thursday

Despite efforts by opponents to get it thrown off Illinois ballots in November, supporters of a statewide referendum on an amendment to the Illinois constitution that will reform redistricting have moved ahead with a voter education blitz;
 
 
That’s a section of a new TV ad from the Independent Map coalition, which wants to put the constitutional amendment question to Illinois voters this fall. Altona (AL-tone-ah) farmer David Erickson serves on the Independent Map board of directors;
 
 
Opponents claim the idea of creating an independent, non-partisan commission to create legislative districts is unconstitutional. The Independent Map group collected nearly 600-thousand signatures to put the question to Illinois voters. Erickson, who also serves as vice president of the Illinois Farm Bureau, expects a court decision by this Thursday (July 21).
