Illinois public health releases report on maternal mortality

For the first time, Illinois Public Health officials have released a report breaking down the issue of pregnancy related deaths. First Lady Diana Rauner is pleased with the recommendations with making house calls for those who need it....

First Lady Rauner says the struggles are relateable for all mothers, but not all of them have a safety net....

The report found about 73 Illinois women die within a year of pregnancy each year. Black women are six times more likely to die of a pregnancy related condition than white women. Other recommendations call for increased access to substance abuse and mental health treatment for pregnant and postpartum women. The report also recommends medicaid eligibility for postpartum care be expanded from 60 days to one year after delivery.
