Clinton High School Strengthens Spectator Policy for School Activities

If you're coming to Clinton schools for any sort of extracurricular activity and you disrupt the activity to the point of ejection, the consequences just got more severe.

Athletic Director Matt Koeppel indicates this is an effort to try to reel in poor behavior by parents and fans by lengthening the absence from future activities as well as adding a component of sitting through the curriculum on proper spectator behavior.

Spectator conduct has been a big contributor to the official shortage being experienced by the Illinois High School Association, or IHSA. Koeppel hopes strengthening the consequences for unruly fans will contribute to a better atmosphere for officials to do their jobs.

Koeppel indicates it is his goal as an administrator to treat officials as well as possible when they come to Clinton. He feels many officials enjoy coming to Clinton because of the way they are treated.

The Clinton Board of Education approved the new policy last week. There is the belief among administrators you could see other school boards adopt stricter policies and even could see the IHSA and IESA respond accordingly as well.
