DeWitt County Board Chair Updates on Latest With Solar Ordinances

The DeWitt Board's Land Use Committee is continuing its work to revamp the County's solar ordinances.

DeWitt County Board Chair Terry Ferguson on the WHOW Morning Show Monday told Regional Radio News they are looking at expanding the capacity of solar farms and so they are reviewing ordinances that would come with a large-scale facility.

Protecting drainage districts and tiling is among the concerns on the radar of the Land Use Committee. According to Ferguson, a single pole for a solar panel could do significant damage to the tiling in the fields of the County.

Like wind farms, Ferguson says non-participating landowners have rights and their perspectives need to be taken into account. He indicates they are reviewing their setback distances for solar.

Ferguson indicates preliminary conversations with a potential developer of solar indicates nothing the County is doing with its solar ordinances will prevent them from developing in DeWitt County.

Ferguson points out the public will be able to participate more with the RPC and ZBA process before the proposal goes to the County Board.
