COVID Mandates, Teacher Shortage Force DeLand-Weldon Schools Into One-Day Remote Learning

DeLand-Weldon students will have a remote learning day this Friday.

Superintendent Amanda Geary tells Regional Radio News it is a whirlwind of the substitute teacher shortage and COVID mandates from the State of Illinois on staff.

According to Geary, the frustrations of the mandates from the State of Illinois regarding COVID combined with the existing challenges of staffing schools are starting to get to her a little bit as she tries to run a school district.

On top of the mounting frustrations of mandates, the results of the situation are not just pulling administrators into jobs they usually do not do, but also teachers. Geary says everyone is exhausted and things only get more confusing when there's confusion on how COVID situations are supposed to be handled.

Geary says the middle school girl's basketball team is on pause for COVID reasons right now but the rest of the extracurricular activities are going on as normal.

Geary thanks her community for their continued cooperation and understanding during what is becoming an increasingly difficult school year.
