Bubba Watson Takes Second Northern Trust Open Title in Three Years

Riviera has often been called a shot-maker's course. Well, there's no greater shot-maker in golf right now than Bubba Watson, so it makes sense that he would win his second Northern Trust Open in three years.

Watson shot a three-under 68 on Sunday to beat Adam Scott and Jason Kokrak by a single stroke. It was an imaginative, creative round that included birdies on two of the final three holes and a one-handed iron from the 18th fairway.

Watson also won at Riviera in 2014 -- also finishing 15 under -- and went on to win his second Masters later that spring. He joins a group of golfers that includes Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Tom Watson, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer that have multiple wins at the Northern Trust Open (formerly the L.A. Open).

Bubba finished sixth in the field in strokes gained tee to green, and maybe even more impressively, 11th in strokes gained putting. This is the Bubba way. If he's mentally locked in, he's incredibly difficult to beat. Augusta has been put on notice in another seven weeks.

Rory McIlroy briefly co-led early after an eagle at the first hole but played his next 17 holes in 6 over (including a birdie at the last) to come in T20. It means nothing long term, but that wasn't a great finishing kick from the Ulsterman.

Adam Scott finished 15th in strokes gained putting this week at Riviera. If he keeps that up, we're going to be seeing him hoisting multiple trophies this season.

Dustin Johnson played consistently well this week and finished fourth but didn't putt great as he was 28th in strokes gained putting.

Jordan Spieth missed the 13th cut of his pro career this week. It was disappointing, especially given the fact that he nearly won this event last season. He's not worried about the finish, however, and you shouldn't be, either.

"It's already done," said Spieth on Friday. "Nothing I can do about it."
