Yankees' Chapman Gets 30 Game Suspension; World Series MVP Gets Raise

Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has been suspended 30 games without pay by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and will not appeal the decision. The suspension occurs under MLB's new domestic violence policy and stems from an alleged incident in October 2015.

In that incident, for which he will not face criminal charges, Chapman admitted to firing eight shots in the garage of his Miami home, and he also allegedly pushed and choked his girlfriend.

C

hapman will lose roughly $1.7 million in salary while serving his suspension. He'll be allowed to pitch and work out with the team and pitch in spring training games. He will not be allowed to play during the regular season until May 9. Per ESPN's Jayson Stark, Chapman would be eligible to return May 9 even if they Yankees have one or more games rained out/postponed before that date. More:

In a statement Chapman said the decision was made to not appeal the suspension to minizime distractions. He added he did not harm his girlfriend in the incident but should have used better judgement.

Yahoo!'s Jeff Passan reports that the Royals and catcher Salvador Perez have reworked his contract to keep him in Kansas City through the 2021 season. Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the new Perez deal is for $52.5 million over five years.

Perez, 25, had been signed to a deep-bargain contract that allowed the Royals to control him through 2019 at a cost of just $16.75 million from 2016-19. Perez enters the 2016 season with roughly $5 million in career earnings. This new contract replaces the latter years of the previous one and, per Passan, will guarantee Perez at least $30 million.

Perez, 25, owns a career line of .279/.306/.431 (100 OPS+) across parts of five big-league seasons. He's coming off a 2015 season in which he hit 21 homers for the champion Royals. Perez is also regarded as a skilled handler of pitchers. He's a three-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner and last year was named World Series MVP.

For the upcoming season, the SportsLine projection system tabs Perez for a line of .249/.278/.407 with 22 home runs in 610 at-bats.
