Round of 16 Opens Tonight in NCAA Tournament; NBA Declarations Continue

The Sweet 16 opens tonight and by Sunday night, we'll know who plays in next weekends Final Four from Houston.

It's a terrific lineup tonight as all top-five seeds will be featured, opening with second-seeded Villanova and third-seeded Miami in the South Region from Louisville, Kentucky starting at 6:10 central time.

The Wildcats made easy work of UNC-Ashville then dispatched Iowa. The Hurricanes escaped a pesky Buffalo team in the opening round then beat Wichita State at their own game of tough defense and excellent offensive execution.

Following their game in Louisville will be the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks, who are the tournaments top-overall seed, and will take on Maryland. The Terps needed a second half surge to get by the Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii, who upset Cal in the opening round.

The Jayhawks have looked the part of the tournament's top team, scoring 100-points in an opening round win over Austin Peay then taking care of UConn in the second round.

Mayland and Kansas will tip at 8:40 central time.

Tonight in Anaheim, California, the comeback masters, Texas A&M will square off with Big 12 rival Oklahoma at 6:37 central time.

The Sooners feature one of college basketball's best in Buddy Heild, and the Aggies could be considered fortunate to be in the Sweet 16 after Northern Iowa blew the biggest lead in NCAA basketball history with under a minute to go, as Panthers allowed a 12-2 run for Texas A&M to tie the game then win it in double-overtime.

The winner of that game will meet the winner of top-seeded Oregon and fourth-seeded Duke.

The Ducks, by many critics are the tournaments weakest seed, taking on one of the more talented units in country and the Duke Blue Devils.

The Ducks easily beat Holy Cross in the opening round and escaped St. Joe's with a late rally. Duke beat in-state rival UNC-Wilmington then took care of the Ivy League's champ, Yale to reach the Sweet 16 yet again under Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

The Ducks and Blue Devils tip at 9:07 central time in Anaheim.

>>Kentucky Players Eligible for NBA Draft, Will Enter

In a series of Twitter messages Wednesday afternoon, Calipari announced that all Kentucky players eligible for the NBA Draft will declare and test the waters without signing an agent.

Calipari said quote-"Every player who is eligible for the draft, including our walk-ons, will submit their names for the NBA Draft in hopes of being invited to the combine in May.

"The new rule states they can submit their name a total of three times. If they choose to withdraw, they have until 10 days after the combine. It's a true win-win for the student-athlete."

Basically, that means every player on the Kentucky roster outside of Isaac Humphries and Tai Wynyard -- each of whom are ineligible for the draft due to age -- will declare for the draft and test the waters.

The relevant players among that group are Jamal Murray (currently No. 4 on the CBS Sports NBA Draft big board), Skal Labissiere (No. 14), Tyler Ulis (No. 15), Isaiah Briscoe (No. 96), and Marcus Lee (No. 139).

The other players who will declare are Derek Willis, Dominique Hawkins, Charles Matthews, Mychal Mulder, EJ Floreal and Jonny David. Of this group, Matthews has the best chance to develop into an NBA player due to his athleticism, but his stock around the league is not nearly high enough to expect to be selected.

>>Providence F Bentil To Test Draft Waters

Providence is going to lose Kris Dunn to the NBA Draft this season. Might the Friars also lose its other All-Big East performer.

According to a report from Evan Daniels over at Scout, forward Ben Bentil is going to put his name into the draft to test the waters.

Bentil averaged 21.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for a Friar team that lost in the second round to North Carolina over the weekend.

From an NBA standpoint, there is a lot to like about what Bentil brings to the table. First and foremost, he's a terrific pick-and-roll/pick-and-pop player, as his relationship this season with Kris Dunn showed. He has really strong hands at the catch point, and he also has the ability to step away and knock down shots out to the collegiate 3-point line, as he made 52 3s on the season.

Overall, his offensive game is terrific. He has great touch around the rim with his right-handed hook-shot, he can actually attack a closeout as a power forward, and he's powerful enough to finish through contact.
