Arrieta, Cubs Win Again; Sox, Cardinals Lose

>>Arrieta Wins 16th Straight As Cubs Beat Brewers

Jake Arrieta's bid for a second straight no-hitter ended after five pitches and the Cubs ace went on to win his 16th straight decision, leading Chicago over the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 Thursday.

Arrieta (5-0) allowed one run, three hits and four walks in five innings - the first run he allowed at Wrigley Field since July 25. Alex Presley's fifth-inning RBI double ended Arrieta's home scoreless streak at 52 2/3 innings, four outs shy of Ray Herbert's major league record set with the Chicago White Sox in 1962-63.

Arrieta's streak of consecutive winning decisions is the longest since Jose Contreras of the White Sox won 17 in a row from August 2005 to July 2006, according to STATS. Chicago has won in Arrieta's last 18 starts, a team record.

Ben Zobrist hit a two-run single in the first off Taylor Jungmann (0-4), who gave up five runs, six hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings as his ERA rose to 9.15. He also hit Bryant with two pitches.

David Ross hit solo home run onto Waveland Avenue in the second, and Anthony Rizzo and Tommy La Stella added RBI doubles in the third for a 5-0 lead.

Villar had three hits and stole three bases as the Brewers lost to the Cubs for the 14th time in 15 games thanks to suspect pitching.

Jon Lester (2-1, 1.98) faces Atlanta RHP Aaron Blair (0-1, 5.06) at Wrigley to begin a three-game series matching the NL teams with the best and worst records.

>>D'backs Blank Cardinals

Rubby De La Rosa picked up the pace between pitches and tossed a gem, striking out a career-high 10 and allowing two hits over seven innings as Arizona beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0.

Chris Herrmann and Brandon Drury homered, and the Diamondbacks earned a split of the four-game series.

Herrmann's two-run home run - after Drury's blooper fell between center fielder Stephen Piscotty and shortstop Aledmys Diaz for a hustle double - gave the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Drury lined a 2-1 pitch from Michael Wacha (2-1) into the seats in left field for a solo shot in the fourth.

Wacha (2-1) lasted seven innings and pitched effectively except for the homers and a wild pitch. He struck out nine with two walks (one intentional) and allowed three runs and five hits.

The home runs were the first two he allowed this season.

Daniel Hudson and Brad Ziegler each threw a scoreless inning, with Ziegler earning his fifth save. Jean Segura stole his 100th career base in the eighth inning.

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a second-inning single. The Cardinals' two hits were their fewest in a game since last August.

Mike Leake (0-2) is set for his fifth start of the season when he goes against the Washington Nationals.

>>Machado's Five RBIs Leads Orioles Past White Sox

Manny Machado had a grand slam and a career-high five RBIs, leading the Orioles over the White Sox 10-2 Thursday night and stopping Chicago's six-game winning streak.

Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo hit consecutive third-inning homers for the Orioles, whose 8-1 record at Camden Yards is the best home mark in the major leagues.

Machado stopped an 0-for-17 slide with an RBI double in a four-run third inning against John Danks (0-4) and homered in the sixth off Jake Petricka. Machado is batting .333 with a team-high seven homers.

Mychal Givens (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to win in relief of Tyler Wilson, who allowed two runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Danks gave up six runs and nine hits in six-plus innings.

After Todd Frazier's two-run homer in the first, Adam Jones hit an RBI double in the bottom half. Baltimore burst ahead 5-2 in the third on Machado's double, Davis' two-run homer and Trumbo's solo shot.

Before Machado's slam, which landed in the Orioles' bullpen, second baseman Brett Lawrie could not handle a sharp grounder by Nolan Reimold, an error that allowed J.J. Hardy to score from second.

Carlos Rodon (1-2) is to make his fifth start on Friday. He pitched a scoreless inning in his only other appearance at Camden Yards on April 29 last year.

Mike Wright (1-2) has a 6.23 ERA in three starts and 17 1/3 innings this season. He starts Friday for Baltimore against Chicago.
