Jason Day Goes Wire To Wire at Players Championship

Jason Day won his first Players Championship this week by four strokes over Kevin Chappell. Day shot a 71 on Sunday to seal the deal at 15 under (right where he started the third round). It wasn't easy, though. Day had to overcome a 38 on the front nine to nab his seventh win in his last 17 events.

He did so in style on the back nine with a 33 that was tied for the second-best on the day. It completed a perfect 36 holes of golf on the back nine at Sawgrass on the week for Day. Not a single bogey on 10-18, the first time any golfer has ever done that.

The wire-to-wire win hasn't happened at this tournament since 2000 when Hal Sutton did it. And Day joins Adam Scott, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Martin Kaymer as the only golfers with a Players, a major and a WGC win in their careers.

Chappell played very well on Sunday with a 69, including one of the best shots of the day on No. 17 to move into second alone. It's the second time this season Chappell's come up just shy of a win due to Jason Day -- the first coming at the Arnold Palmer Invitational -- but he has to be building confidence with his play this year.

Justin Thomas posted the low round of the day with a 65 on Sunday and, for a little while, appeared to have a chance at a playoff as Day was coming back to the field on his front nine. Instead, Thomas will have to settle for a really nice paycheck and some serious confidence leaving TPC Sawgrass.

Matt Kuchar missed some opportunities on the greens coming in, most notably a short eagle putt on No. 16, but a very nice 68 on Sunday pushed him to a T3 finish.

He almost did it again. Rory McIlroy has become the master of the backdoor top 10 finish but came up just short of a top 10 performance this week after a Sunday 70. McIlroy looked like he might make a charge on the back nine, but after rinsing his tee shot on the par-3 13th, he was never able to find his rhythm on the closing holes.
