Sages Outlast Champaign St. Thomas More, Win Okaw Valley Conference Title

As heard on 95.9 FM WEZC Friday night, senior quarterback Caleb Hanson returned to full action and despite one series last Friday night, the Sages on-field general for the first time this year showed signs of rust in a 39-14 win against Champaign St. Thomas More.

Coming into action Friday, Hanson had committed one turnover all year. All in the first half, Hanson threw three interceptions, showing signs of a little of rust after playing the opening drive last Friday night against Casey-Westfield.

The Sages defense pitched a shutout as Clavin Davis and Mike Lamb returned kickoffs for touchdowns and starting quarterback DJ Lee left in the first half with an injury and the Sages offense wasn’t the same as Monticello wrapped a share of the Okaw Valley Conference title Friday.

Hanson finished with an uncharacteristic three interceptions but threw two touchdowns on 15-for-27 passing with 206 yards.

Nathan Graham had an interception return for touchdown and found the end zone twice on offense on 127 yards with seven receptions.

Isiah Florey scored on an eight-yard touchdown and Lucas Lieb romped 71 yards for a big score late in the third quarter helping Monticello pull away after just a 19-14 halftime lead.

Davis battled cramps for much of the second half but battled through the entire way, taking over at quarterback for Lee and finished with 42 yards passing, throwing three interceptions.

Johnny Dawson, Alek Bundy and Graham had interceptions Friday night.

Monticello improves to 7-0 and travels to Rantoul next Friday night.
