Monticello Holds on For Overtime Win Over Champaign St. Thomas More

The Monticello Sages outlasted the Champaign St. Thomas More Sabers in overtime 63-59 Friday night in Okaw Valley boys basketball action from Champaign.

 

The Sages led 56-50 with 4:19 to play in the fourth quarter, but the Sabres used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 58 and Johnny Dawson missed a turnaround three from the wing with 0.8 seconds to send the game to overtime.

The Sages outscored the Sabers 5-1 in the overtime, making just one free, but Dawson’s two free throws with 47 seconds to play sealing the victory for Monticello.

 

Luke Stokowski’s 19 points and 10 rebounds led the Sages. Calvin Fisher added 13 points and 15 rebounds.

 

Dawson added 11 points and Isiah Florey finished with nine points.

 

The Sages dominated the glass 48-26, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds for 18 second-chance points.

 

The Sages shot 10-for-21 from the free throw line to the Saber’s 16-for-19.

 

St. Thomas More drops to 9-12 overall while the Sages improve to 13-3 overall and 1-1 in Okaw Valley action.

 

The Sages return to action Saturday night when they host Unity at Monticello. Tip time is set for 6:30 pm.
