Last week Wesley Bryan contended at the Genesis Open before falling back a little bit on Sunday to finish T4. He carried the momentum into Thursday with a 6-under 64 in Round 1 at the Honda. He shares the lead with Cody Gribble.
Bryan finished in the top 20 in strokes gained putting but in the top 10 in strokes gained in approach shots. So while he putted well, you don’t normally shoot 64 without some immense ball-striking.
The winner of this tournament has only cracked double digits twice since 2007 so it stands to reason that Bryan only needs to shoot something like three 69s to win. That’s easier said than done when less than half the field broke par Thursday.
