Monticello Wins Sectionals in Overtime Thriller

The Monticello Lady Sages held on and beat St. Joseph-Ogden in overtime, 41-40 from the Iroquois West Sectional in girls Class 2A postseason action Thursday night.

The Lady Sages led 19-16 at break and the Lady Spartans started the quarter on a 3-0 run and it was back and forth the rest of the way with neither team leading by more then three and trading leads and ties.

Monticello started the game on an 8-1 run, St. Joe finished the quarter on a 9-4 run to keep it close at 12-10.

Tied at 34-all with 15 seconds left, St. Joe called a timeout but they were called for an offensive foul with 3.1 seconds left and a last second shot fromm about 60 feet skipped off the front of the rim and the game went to overtime.

Zanna Myers, who struggled most of the night from the floor, knocked down her first three on the Lady Sages first overtime possession, but Peyton Crowe for the Lady Spartans converted a baseline floater and was fouled, making the and-1 free throw to tie the game at 37.

Tatum McCall made the next two baskets for the Lady Sages to give them a 41-37 advantage.

With St. Joe forced to foul with under a minute left to get Monticello into a free throw shooting scenario, the Lady Sages turned the ball over under the basket with about 30 seconds left and Bree Trimble hit a three on the other end to cut the deficit to 41-40.

The Lady Sages missed their next shot under the basket on their next possession, the Lady Spartans ran the clock down to 15 seconds and called a timeout to set up a play.

An off-balance shot in the lane was off the mark, the Lady Spartans continued their dominance on the offensive boards with a second chance but could not convert and Monticello was able to grab the third opportunity rebound and ran out the clock and purple jerseys littered the floor in celebration.

McCall scored a game high 27 points, playing with a fever last night.

Myers finished with eight.

Trimble led St. Joe with 17 points.

The Lady Spartans finish their campaign 21-9.

The Lady Sages improve to 23-4 overall and are off to the Pontiac Supersectional to take on Chicago Harlan Monday night at 8 pm. Harlan beat Elmhurst Timothy Christian Thursday, 58-37.
