Monticello Rallies Past Pontiac

Mitch Carr settled down after giving up five runs in the first three innings and set down 13 of the final 14 batters he faced, including an inning double play in the sixth, and Monticello rallied past Pontiac 9-5 in Illini Prairie boys baseball action Thursday night at Monticello High School.

The Indians scored the games first five runs but the second time through the order proved to be the difference as Monticello tacked on four runs in the third inning then took the lead in the fifth and added three insurance runs in the sixth.

Jeff Wileaver finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a pair of runs, and a run driven to pace the Monticello offense. Luke Stokowski added a double and a run finishing 2-for-3.

Brett Macak scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on an Andrew Ellison sacrifice fly RBI. Macak finished 2-for-3, hitting in the sixth spot in the order, generally filled by his big brother Brody, who sat with a sore knee.

The Sages were without juniors Brody Macak (knee) and Owen Trybom and senior Alex Marquardt (finger, hip) because of injury, featuring four sophomores in the lineup.

Carr went 6 2/3 innings allowing five runs, eight hits and struck out seven.

Stokowski worked around a walk, hit batter and struck out Jacob Grieff to end the game.

Monticello is 19-2 overall and 6-1 in Illini Prairie Conference action.

The Indians are 4-10 overall. Thursday’s game was their third Illini Prairie matchup this week with another Friday afternoon.
