Lady Maroons Down Normal U-High With Walk Off, Extra Innings Win

Destiny Schlessinger hit a walk-off run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Clinton Lady Maroons downed Normal U-High 2-1 in non-conference girls softball action from Clinton High School Saturday morning.

Schlessinger was the Country Financial Brad James Player of the game and her hit was set up by Camdyn Alsup's lead-off walk to start the eighth inning. After Zoie Pollen struck out, Schlessinger hit a fly ball past the U-High right fielder and Alsup beat an errant throw home for the winning run.

Olivia Sanders picked up the win in the circle for Clinton. She went eight innings, allowed an earned run on nine hits with seven strikeouts and zero walks.

Schlessinger finished 2-for-3 with a run. Elly Maier was 2-for-3 with a run.

Sanders had great help in the field as well.

Maier saved an extra base-hit in the fourth inning when she snagged a fly ball over her head as she tumbled to the ground on an Emily O'Leary fly ball.

Pollen threw a strike to home plate as U-High's Maddie Roop tried to score on a sacrifice fly later in the inning to preserve a shutout, at the time, for Sanders.

The Lady Maroons host Springfield Southeast Monday afternoon at Clinton High School in Class 3A Regional quarter-final action. Hear the game live starting at 4:30 pm on the Big 1520 AM/92.3 FM WHOW and online at dewittdailynews.com.
