Monticello Wins State!

Monticello's Alek Bundy made the interception late in the fourth and Monticello goes on to win their first state title in history!

 

Monticello went to Memorial Stadium in Urbana-Champaign to play their first state title against Byron. Byron, who played Monticello last year in the quarterfinals and won 21-20 off a fumble from Monticello. This game would hold a different ending. Monticello getting Byron to throw late in the fourth quarter would help decide that ending as Monticello would win 24-20.

 

Byron who led the game in yards gained with 372 yards and possession time 31:35, couldn't finish out on top. Monticello would have a few huge stops getting Byron to turn the ball over on 4th down. Byron went for it six times on 4th down only succeeding on two. Byron, who ran the ball most of the game established over 314 yards. Issac Stickler ran for 139 yards, and one touchdown led Byron, Ricky Messing ran for 81 with one touchdown, and Drake Snodgrass with 80 yards and one touchdown. Ben Carlson only threw a total of 4 times completing two passes for a total of 65 yards. 

 

Monticello covered all ends with rushing and passing. Braden Snyder, threw over 210 yards with two touchdowns, both going to running Alek Bundy, who had 136 yards receiving, 52 yards rushing, and two touchdowns. Asher Bradd would follow with four receptions for 64 yards. Monticello's defense held out, getting huge stops in the games, as Byron went for 9-16 on 3rd down conversions along with 2-6 on 4th down.

 

Monticello won its first ever 3A Class Football State Final in history and making it Coach Cullen Welters 4th state title. Coach Welter along with Seniors Riley Austin, Braden Snyder, and Asher Bradd received medals at the end of the game honoring them for their efforts in winning the state final. 

 

Play of the Game: Late in the 4th quarter, with 2:05 left on the clock, Benn Carlson threw to Isacc Stickler where Alek Bundy intercepted the pass.
