Notre Dame guards TJ Gibbs and D.J. Harvey scored 19 points each, and Juwan Durham sparked his team with all of his 10 points and five blocked shots in the second half, as the Irish held off late-charging Illinois 76-74 in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game Tuesday night.
Trent Frazier's 24-foot, solid-look 3-point try for the Illini rimmed out just before time expired.
Durham, a 6-foot-11 sophomore transfer from Connecticut, registered a career high for points. Harvey also notched a career high and Gibbs a season high.
Notre Dame (6-1) won its fourth straight while Illinois (2-5) lost for the fifth time in its last six games.
The Irish, fueled in large part by Durham's play off the bench, led 65-52 with 6:30 to go before the Illini mounted their rally that fell just short.
Aaron Jordan led Illinois with 23 points. Freshman Giorgi Bezhanishvili added 22. Those were career highs for both players.
A back-and-forth first half yielded nine lead changes and six ties, with the Illini holding a 35-34 advantage at the break.
